Qualitative research group discussion

From question to useful output

01

Your question

Define the audience and the decision.

02

The right approach

Agree on scope and specialist support.

03

Clear findings

Review the evidence in context.

04

Your next step

Use the output to inform your work.

Build a discussion guide around the objectives

A discussion guide should help explore the research question while leaving room for participants to explain their own experiences. Start with context, explore the key topics and use follow-up questions to understand why an answer matters. Review wording for assumptions or prompts that could steer a response.

Agree on transcription requirements

Confirm the language, format and level of detail before transcription begins. Decide whether speaker labels, timestamps or translated versions are needed. Share relevant terminology and any confidentiality requirements with the project team.

Separate observations from interpretation

Analysis should distinguish what participants said from what the researcher infers. Look for recurring themes, differences between groups and exceptions that challenge an initial explanation. Use quotations carefully and keep their context intact.

Make the report fit the decision

A topline report gives an early view of key findings. A fuller analysis can develop themes and implications in more detail. Agree on the reporting depth and avoid presenting a small qualitative sample as a numerical estimate of the whole market.
